An office makeover tutorial!

We recently tackled a home office makeover in my home!  Given that my hubby works from home, it was time that the space became something more than a dumping ground.  A new room in my house isn’t complete without a paper project (or two or three), so I decided to add a little paper and glue in here too!

Essentially, I simply took some old wooden magazine holders that we had kicking around the house and gave them a facelift with some shiny embossed paper.  This paper is from DCWV and is currently available at Hobby Lobby.  Called Embossed Metallic, it is thick, shiny and perfect for decoupaging!

Here’s how you can recreate the look:

Embossed Foil Magazine holders

  1. Using your wooden or cardboard magazine holder as a template, trace one of the largest sides onto a sheet of 12×12 Embossed Foil paper. Make sure to center the holder in the middle of the paper so the edges will wrap around the front and back, and to line up the top of the holder with the top edge of the paper. Cut out.
  2. Repeat with the opposite side of the magazine holder. You should now have two pieces that cover the largest sides of your holder and warp around both the front and back of the holder.embossed foil 2
  3. On both pieces, use a scoring board to score a line at the front and back edges of the paper where the paper wraps around the holder.embossed foil 3
  4. Using decoupage paste, apply an even layer to your magazine holder and then to the wrong side of your paper. Place the paper onto the holder and smooth down gently with your hand. If you get some paste on the foil side of the paper, just take a slightly damp paper towel and wipe it off.embossed foil 5
  5. Once the sides have dried, use the front of the holder to trace a piece that will cover the small surface. Depending on the size of your magazine holder, you may be able to use scraps from step 1 for this piece. As you are cut, move in about 1/16” from the line you drew. This will ensure that the piece is about 1/8” smaller than the surface of the holder.
  6. Lining it up with the top edge of this side, decoupage the piece in place. Allow drying time before proceeding to the last side.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the back side of the magazine holder.embossed foil final 2
  8. Although the texture and foil finish to the paper provides great detail, you may want to embellish further by taking a different color from the foil pack and creating a 3D flower or other shape. Adhere to the holder with an adhesive dot.

These have found a little home on the shelf for packing and shipping materials and I have to say that I am pretty fond on them.  I need to find some other products to cover with this paper – it is pretty awesome! let me know if you have some ideas!
